Mark Tinkler, creative director for the New York-based company Plumbdesign, designed the Thinkmap java applet to translate data into a three-dimensional concatenation of hubs and spokes.

The Visual Thesaurus was created with Thinkmap and demonstrates its knack for capturing relational information in a visual way that resembles an kinetic sculpture in virtual space. more-->


The Visual Thesaurus

Thinkmap gives the user dynamic control over how much information to view in real-time.

The user simply types in a word and its synonyms appear in a moveable diagram with multiple relationships and connections accessible by rolling the curser through the space.

While the current incarnation of the Visual Thesaurus may be less practical than the average word processor thesaurus, it points to a not-too-distant future in which spatial reasoning might facilitate the understanding of linguistic and other "non-spatial" disciplines.
